Greenwood Social vs Hootsuite vs Buffer: Which Social Media Scheduler Is Actually Worth It in 2026?

Choosing a social media scheduling tool shouldn’t require a spreadsheet and a finance degree. But if you’ve ever tried to compare pricing across Hootsuite, Buffer, and the dozens of other tools out there, you know it can feel that way.

We built Greenwood Social because we couldn’t find a tool that was affordable, simple, and actually designed for how small business owners and creators work. So we get asked all the time: how does it compare to the big names?

Here’s the honest answer. I’m going to tell you what each tool does well, where each one falls short, and who each one is actually built for. Then you can decide for yourself.

The Pricing Breakdown

This is where the biggest differences show up. All three tools use different pricing models, and the total cost changes a lot depending on how many platforms you use.

Hootsuite: The Enterprise Giant

Best for: Large teams and enterprises with complex approval workflows, deep analytics needs, and budgets to match.

Hootsuite has been around since 2008 and it shows. Both in terms of feature depth and pricing. The Standard plan starts at $99/month per user on annual billing. If you pay monthly, that jumps to $149. And that’s per user. So a 3-person team is paying $297/month minimum.

The Advanced plan is $249/month per user. The Enterprise plan requires custom pricing with a minimum of 5 users and 50 social accounts. They do offer a nonprofit discount that brings plans down to about $24.50 to $64.50/month, which is genuinely generous.

What Hootsuite does well: Team collaboration and permissions. If you’re a 20-person marketing department where posts need to go through legal review before publishing, Hootsuite’s approval workflows are genuinely best-in-class. Their analytics and reporting are also deep. Custom reports, competitor benchmarking, trend tracking. For big companies, this stuff matters.

Where it falls short: For solo users and small businesses, it’s overkill. You’re paying $99/month for features designed for large teams. The interface feels dated and overwhelming. And while they’ve added AI caption generation, it’s basic compared to a full Claude AI integration. Their free plan was killed in 2023, so that $99/month starting price is a real barrier for anyone watching their budget.

One more thing worth knowing: Hootsuite holds a contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for social media surveillance. For values-driven businesses, nonprofits, and organizations that serve immigrant communities, this is a dealbreaker. Your tools should match your values.

Buffer: The Simple Scheduler

Best for: Solo creators and very small teams who want clean, simple scheduling and don’t need AI content generation or bulk workflows.

Buffer charges per channel: $5 to $6/month per channel on the Essentials plan, or $10 to $12/month per channel on the Team plan. There’s a free plan with 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel, which is helpful for testing but pretty limiting for real use.

At first glance, Buffer’s per-channel pricing looks similar to our per-platform pricing. On 3 channels, the cost is nearly identical. But the differences show up in what you actually get for that price.

What Buffer does well: Simplicity. The interface is clean, modern, and stupid easy to learn. For someone who just needs to schedule a handful of posts per week across a few platforms, Buffer is solid. They also offer a 50% nonprofit discount, and their free plan gives small accounts a way to start without paying anything.

Where it falls short: No real AI content generation. Buffer has basic AI captions, but there’s no deep integration where AI reads your website and writes a full month of posts for you. No bulk scheduling workflow either. And the per-channel pricing adds up fast once you’re on more than 5 platforms. Ten channels on the Essentials plan costs $50 to $60/month.

Greenwood Social: The AI-Powered À La Carte Scheduler

Best for: Small business owners, freelancers, creators, and social media managers who want AI to create the content AND schedule it. At the lowest possible price.

Full disclosure: we built this one. My husband and I. So take my perspective with that context. But here’s what we designed it to do and why.

Greenwood Social costs $5/month per platform. Pick only the platforms you use. Three platforms? $15/month. One platform? $5/month. No bundles, no per-user charges, no forced upgrades.

The AI integration is the real differentiator. Greenwood Social connects to Claude AI through MCP (Model Context Protocol). That means you can have a conversation with Claude. Paste a website URL, do a brain dump, upload a document. Claude generates 30+ platform-specific social posts, then schedules them directly through Greenwood Social in one bulk session. No switching tabs. No copy-pasting. One conversation and your month is done.

What Greenwood Social does well: AI-powered content creation that goes way beyond basic captions. Bulk scheduling where you can do 90+ posts in a single session. À la carte pricing that respects tight budgets. And we’re a POC woman-owned family business with zero government surveillance contracts. Your tools should reflect your values.

Where it falls short: We’re newer and smaller than Hootsuite and Buffer. We don’t have the deep analytics dashboards that enterprise teams need. Our team collaboration features are still growing. If you need multi-tiered approval workflows or competitor benchmarking reports, Hootsuite is honestly the better fit today. We’re building for the people those tools left behind.

So Which One Should You Use?

Here’s the honest framework.

Choose Hootsuite if you’re a large team (5+ people) that needs enterprise-grade approval workflows, deep analytics, and competitor reporting. You have the budget, and you need the control. Starting at $99/month per user.

Choose Buffer if you’re a solo creator who wants the simplest possible scheduling experience, you only need 2 to 3 channels, and you don’t need AI content generation. Buffer’s free plan is a great place to start. Starting at $5-6/month per channel.

Choose Greenwood Social if you want AI to actually create the content (not just schedule it), you want to pay only for the platforms you use, you want to batch a full month of content in one session, or you care about supporting an ethical, family-owned alternative to big tech tools. Starting at $5/month per platform.

The Real Math

Let’s say you’re a small business posting to Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Here’s what you’re looking at:

At 3 platforms, Greenwood Social and Buffer are close in price. The difference is what you get for it. Greenwood Social’s Claude AI integration creates your content and schedules it in one workflow. Buffer’s AI features are limited to basic caption suggestions.

At 5+ platforms, the gap gets bigger. Greenwood Social stays at $25/month. Buffer climbs to $30+. And Hootsuite stays at $99/month regardless because it’s a flat per-user price.

You do the math.
